Zechariah was given a vision. A vision of the sword being called to life to strike down the Good Shepherd of God's choice. Not only would the shepherd be mortally wounded but all the sheep of Israel would scatter. How two thirds would be gone but the third that made it through the fire would be pure like silver. That's what God is asking for and Jesus provides an opportunity: to be pure like silver. Don't understand what I mean?
